The sulfomethylation process of aniline in a weakly acidic medium in the presence of formaldehyde and sodium bisulfite was studied, and the composition and structure of the resulting mono- and disulfomethylene anilines were determined. The effects of the molar ratio of the initial reagents and temperature on the product yield were evaluated. At an aniline:formaldehyde:sodium bisulfite ratio of 1:1:0.5 and a temperature of 70 °C, the yield of monosulfomethylene aniline was 80.0%; at a ratio of 1:2:1, the yield of disulfomethylene aniline reached 57.4% at 90 °C. The structure of the synthesized products was studied using elemental analysis, IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy, as well as semi-empirical quantum-chemical methods. The factors influencing the formation of mineral salt deposits and the selection of chemical and mechanical methods for their removal were analyzed.
